PROPELLER ISLAND PRESENTS: The Gossipy Guide

For the third installment of Propeller Island we will be presenting new work by Joe Stevens, Jonathan Trayner, Participatory Spectacle, PEPOMO, Phillip Wilson-Perkin, Pippa Gatty and Thea Stallwood. Selected by the relevance of their previous work to the current project, the artists were asked to produce a guide using whatever media they wished and to produce 50 editions of the work. The resulting guides are collated into a publication, which will be given away to 50 guests at Tenderpixel Gallery on the 12^th and 13^th March 2010. The evening events will include performance and film from some of the artists involved, commencing with a performance by Jane Nash and Eric Maclennan.

Propeller Island is an artist led collaboration based in London. It operates out of a variety of venues as a mobile arena for exhibitions, residencies and events. It takes its name from the novel by Jules Verne, which is a story of a string quartet that gets lured to perform on a floating utopian island. Women in close-up – The image of female heroism

A text written on the occasion of a simultaneous screening of The Passion of Jeanne d’Arc by Carl Theodore Dreyer (1928) and Vivre Sa Vie by Jean Luc Godard (1962).

The Passion of Jeanne d’Arc and Vivre Sa Vie (My life to Live) are films in which we witness two women (Jeanne and Nana) acting on their passion and belief in the Free Will to which they are entitled. Yet for each protagonist their Free Will leads them into battle with the society in which they find themselves.
In both films, Free Will is met with different kinds of condemnation. It is either forbidden or perceived as an unlikely aspiration. Free Will is a folly that can only be tolerated through damning example; ultimately both tales end with the death of Nana and Jeanne.

However, both protagonists outlive these deaths, and do so through their perceived martyrdom. This is an explicit part of the mythology of Joan of Arc, revealed clearly in the closing scenes of Dreyers interpretation of this historic story, but also spoken by Jeanne herself during a scene in her prison cell. And it is this particular scene that Godard quotes in Vivre Sa Vie, as we watch Nana watching Jeanne foresee her death and her future as a martyred soul.

Throughout Vivre Sa Vie we witness Nana desiring a relationship with cultural stuff– like movies, pop music and philosophy, yet none of this culture seems to fulfil her, or create positive actions or episodes in her life.
Her cinema experience with The Passion of Jeanne d’Arc for example, acts as a premonition of her own demise into a life in which she too is trapped and ultimately can only escape through death. Although initially Nana seems an unlikely character for martyrdom when compared to Jeanne, there is a suggestion here through Nana’s

emotional identification with Jeanne’s words that she too is a martyred figure.

However, Godard pushes this suggestion further by taking the creation of Nana and Jeanne’s martyrdom beyond the circumstances of the characters and storyline of the films and into the cinematographic world of sound and image. Godard’s obsessive close-ups of Nana that occur throughout the film become an excersize in mimicry during this scene in thecinema, as both the faces of actors Falconetti and Anna Karina fill the frames of Godards

camera. Godard quotes the film exclusively, in the sense that we do not see Falconetti's face in the context of the cinema. This further highlights the use of the close-up, and creates a collaging of images, fragmenting the sequence. This use of collage disrupts reality for a moment, temporarily distancing the audience from their possible emotional

involvement with the main character of Nana. Godards distancing methods are provoked by his interest in playing with the audience’s awareness and responsibility in how we place meaning upon the images on screen.

And it is perhaps with this invitation of responsibility or empowerment that Godards quotation of Dreyer reveals a further explanation of how Nana and Jeanne outlive their fate.
The quotation acting as a connecting device that forces comparisons to be made between the characters and lives of Nana and Jeanne is made through the creation of their simultaneous image.

This collage of intense close-up distorts filmic space, further intensified by the cutting out of real sound in Vivre Sa Vie, allowing the inter-title dialogue of Jeanne’s words to be the only ‘sound’ in the sequence, heard internally by the audience.

Through his appropriation of the silent cinematic of Dreyer, Godard focuses upon the expressions of Nana and their relationship to Falconetti in her depiction of Jeanne, creating a moving image sequence in which the expressions of the female face become the visuals of heroism.

String Quartet / Joana Bastos and Harun Morrison

Jules Verne’s science fiction novella Propeller Island (1895), after which this nomadic studio-exhibition project takes its name, follows the adventures of a French string quartet touring the U.S. diverted on their travels, ending up in an enormous city-on-a-ship that tours the South Pacific.

In response to this narrative content and particular themes that include: mobility in relation to containment, luxury island hopping and the travel industry, the relativity that unites one’s sense of place with point of view and the fluidity of nomadic sites - Joana Bastos and Harun Morrison will create a series of quartets by positioning themselves in front of various mirrors, already a feature of the space from its handing over.

The ‘string quartet’ thus becomes a visual pun, which you, the passenger, are invited to identify from your own standpoint.

In the second week of 'Propeller Island' things seem to be really coming together which is lovely. Everyone seems to be busy working away and I am extremely excited about using projections as part of my new work. I'm also looking forward to trying to do something with the interesting stair case that leads to ....nowhere....lots of poetential I think!

Revealed: the secret link between perfume advertisements and the dark gods of Atlantis

The old dieties of the oceanic undworld are still with us and are atempting to control our minds through pheremones. Thier purpose is to make us into beautiful but vacant vessels, pliant and unquestioning servents of thier terrible will. They present a dark and seductive bargib; in return for our minds and souls they offer perfect symmetrical beauty and an existence free from unpleasent odours. Throughout history there have always been individuals wiiling to listen to these seductive murmerings and thier numbers are growing; but we must take heed and remember Atlantis!

I hear there is a wall of mirrors in this space, and a gold ceiling rose too. I am visiting for the first time tomorrow, and am excited to see this place. I have plans but who knows what will develop. I also look forward to exploring the darkness underground.

First day on the island

We arrived at the island, and took up our positions. The Island is freezing at this time of year, still there is running fresh water.
Communication from and to the island is easy with free wifi from the french bakery across the road. Transport links are well catered for too. Pippa cycled quite a way to get there, whilst other South Londoners with more to carry took the 345 bus from Peckham - Propeller via too many exotic South London locations to mention.

For Propeller Island I am opening a temporary French Library. It is a modest personal collection made public of French language fiction titles and French interest books collected for the project. Items are being collated from my personal collection, second hand book and charity shops and you.

The library blog is here where the project will be catalogued digitally. At Propeller Island I will create catalogue drawings.

If you have any items for the french library you are welcome to donate or lend them for the project.

Private view / four day extravaganza: Thursday 29th January – Sunday 1st February

Propeller Island signals the start of a series of one month artist run projects to be held in varying locations commencing in a vacant shop and basement in South Kensington. The group consisting of recent graduates from the MA in Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art & Design aim to take over the space / building for the duration creating new work and programming a series of events inviting a variety of practitioners into the space during the month. Engineering events / including exhibitions, film screenings, discussions, theatre, cabaret, dance and performance. Week by week a schedule of events will be posted on the groups’ blog site at http://propellerisland.blogspot.com events will be free of charge and open to the public.

The project culminates with a four-day extravaganza of art and performance running from Thursday 29th of January until Sunday 1st of February 2009. Along side the 18 resident artists there will be an array of special guest performers including; performance artist, Mark McGowan; artist and musician Jo Robertson; firewoman, Alex Glen; artist and theorist John Cussans, the band Les Cox Sportifs, artist / performer Brian Dawn Chalkley and many more.

Propeller Island takes its name from the science fiction novel of the same name by Jules Verne, in which a string quartet is lured onto a roaming island where they perform as the island is propelled across the ocean, stopping off at various locations through out its journey.

The concept is simple; the project aims to blow open the creative process by placing it firmly within the public arena. Utilizing the huge glass shop-front as a window in the working world of the artists involved to passers by. By opening the space every day the public are allowed a unique view into the goings on and not just the final product of a finished and hung show, enabling them to engage at all stages of the production process involved in making a piece of work. The work produced will be representational of the broad range of methods in contemporary fine art practice from painting, drawing and sculpture to sound, video and live performance.
Having graduated just one month ago the energy and D.I.Y culture that proved an integral part of the group mentality at Chelsea continues into this exhibition. The ambition is here to see and so is the vigor and professionalism, which is evident in this exciting new project.

Today we went to Propeller Island. It is a shop in South Kensington which will become a production space for 17 artists for the month of January. At the end of the month on the metaphorical island there will be a 3 day event of invited guests, films and performance. The shop floor is a split level and almost like the back is a stage.
I am looking forward to catching our flight . . .
